Family Practitioner/Surgeon (Full Time/Accompanied)

 

Responsibilities:

Directly reports to the Chief Medical Officer with additional administrative accountability to the Hospital Administrator. Provides healthcare services to patients presenting to the hospital (in- and outpatient) for family practice services. Also serves as backup to staff general surgeon in providing basic general surgery/trauma services for ages pediatric to geriatric.

 

MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides services to inpatients and outpatients including diagnostic evaluation, patient treatment, recovery, and health maintenance program based on current accepted practices encompassed by Family Practice medicine.
  • Is available to assist staff general surgeon in providing outpatient and inpatient surgical care. Is capable of providing basic general surgery services in the absence of the general surgeon. Such services shall include emergency abdominal surgical procedures that cannot be transferred to other facilities in a timely manner, wound care, and basic surgical management of acute trauma.
  • Provides additional primary care services including physical examinations, writing a treatment plan, and keeping progress notes covering diagnostic evaluation for care of outpatients and inpatients.
  • Provides emergency medical services including on-call coverage on a rotating basis with other physicians and responds in timely and courteous manner.
  • Operates under the general guidelines of treatment policies and procedures to include intervention protocols and after care plans.
  • Submits, in a timely manner, information as appropriate to update the plan of care for the patient, coordinate other services, maintenance of complete patient chart and billing of services provided.
  • Works cooperatively with peers and supportive staff to contribute to overall productivity and quality of the care of the team.
  • Maintains all necessary licensure to qualify for active medical staff privileges and abides by Kwajalein Hospital bylaws, policies, and procedures as well as USAKA rules and regulations.
  • Assists CMO and Administrator through recommendations for budgetary planning and development of policies and procedures as relates to area s of expertise.
  • Prepares and presents information to co-workers after attending special programs and workshops as appropriate.
  • Assumes other responsibilities and duties as assigned by CMO.

 

 

JOB KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Current experience in primary care as well as basic abdominal and general surgical procedures are required. Experience and expertise in endoscopy and cesareans are desirable.
  • Integrates patient management - examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis and intervention – in a manner designed to optimize outcomes.
  • Documentation and oral communication are concise, pertinent and meets the professions and departments documentation standards; documentation is timely, legible, and meets standards of completeness and clinical relevance.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing both with co-workers and patients.
  • Computer literacy

 

LEADERSHIP:

  • Facilitates patient and family education, communication, and problem resolution.
  • Serves as a resource person

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 5 years recent experience in family practice that includes some basic general surgery. Proficiency in GI endoscopy and experience in performing cesareans and other gynecologic procedures is desirable.
  • Preferable/desirable to have experience in any of the following: emergency care medicine, hyperbaric medicine, aviation medicine (FAA Aviation Medical Examine), and occupational medicine.
  • Must be comfortable performing low-volume surgery in an isolated setting.


EDUCATION:

  • MD or DO degree
  • Board certification as family practitioner
  • Current U.S. physician license.
  • Proof of eligibility for employment in the US
  • ATLS and ACLS certification
  • Continuing Medical Education that documents current and ongoing training in Family Practice and/or General Surgery through participation in workshops, seminars, etc.

 

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be flexible and willing to assume many responsibilities beyond the usual scope of a family practitioner in providing basic surgery services in the event that staff general surgeon is absent.

Registered Nurse (Full Time/Unaccompanied)

POSITION GOAL:

A Registered Nurse who is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN provides patient care that promotes the safety and well-being of all patient in the hospital and clinic departments on a twenty-four basis. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes. Supports the Hospital and Organization mission and vision. Utilizes knowledge of patient’s age and cultural diversity in the provision of patient care. Contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care.

MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Serves as a consistent 12 hour rotating nursing staff member in the Inpatient and Outpatient Departments. Should be able to assume the nursing care of critically ill patients that present to both the Inpatient and Outpatient Departments.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with hospital and departmental practices that reflect JCAHO and Quality Improvement Standards and performs all work at a level to meet these standards.
  • Assists with current immunization and allergy protocols.
  • Provides patient care and delegated functions based upon the nursing process and in compliance with the hospital, clinic and Department of Nursing standards of practice.

Physician Assistant (Full Time/Unaccompanied)

JOB DUTIES:

  • Under the supervision of a physician; provides services to outpatients and employees including diagnostic evaluation, patient treatment, recovery, and health maintenance program based on current accepted practices.
  • Provides emergency medical services including evaluation, stabilization, and management of patients in a remote island dispensary pending transfer to higher level of care.
  • Maintains current peripheral IV and intraosseous vascular access skills
  • Operates under the general guidelines of Kwajalein Hospital policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Performs minor outpatient and emergency procedures, including minor laceration repair.
  • Performs phlebotomy for diagnostic tests.
  • Assists physicians in procedures and surgery as required.
  • Maintains all necessary licensure to qualify for active privileges as an independent licensed practitioner and abides by Kwajalein Hospital bylaws, policies, and procedures as well as USAKA rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as required in accordance with privileges granted by the Kwajalein Hospital Credentials Committee and assumes other responsibilities and duties as assigned by CMO.
  • Responds to emergent care needs as assigned for Kwajalein or Roi dispensary. (Call for Roi may be two week rotations shared with a Registered Nurse as assigned and call for Kwajalein may be 1:3 and one weekend/month.) with physician back-up.
  • Participates actively with quality assurance and process improvement as required.
  • Provides active participation on multi-disciplinary hospital committees assuming chairperson role as assigned.
  • Participates with administrative projects as delegated or as approved by hospital leadership.

 

JOB SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

  • Current experience in providing emergency and primary care to patients across the age spectrum.
  • Good documentation and oral communication skills.

Dental Office Lead (Full Time/Unaccompanied)

JOB DUTIES:

  • Initiate and carry out all administrative functions associated with Dental Clinic staff and patients
  • Establish and approve work schedules
  • Devise and implement methods to control and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the work services provided
  • Recommend and advise Hospital Administrator and Dentists on problems related to collaborative service efforts and provide appropriate plan for resolution
  • Participates in departmental planning for budgetary requirements and accountability

  • Manages KARDS and shared drives on computer for management of departmental information and access to KRS documents
  • Responsible for timecard approval; travel request and expense report submission; KRS personnel forms
  • Partner with Dentists to conduct regular staff meetings
  • Interface with clinic staff, technical support at EZ-Dental and IT for regular software upgrades and trouble shooting

Nurse Anesthetist (Full Time/Accompanied)

JOB DUTIES:

  • Schedules and coordinates activities engaged in administering anesthetics to patients during surgical procedures, diagnostic procedures for pain management or ventilatory problems.
  • Monitors the effects of specific anesthesia, drugs, techniques, and patient reactions.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements standard operating instructions and practices pertaining to the administration and management of anesthetics that ensure client safety, confidentiality and timely, ethical and quality service.

  • Selects, obtains or administers the anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs and fluids necessary to maintain anesthesia at appropriate levels and support life functions during perioperative period.
  • Regularly assesses the effects of specific anesthesia, applies appropriate non-invasive and invasive monitoring modalities for interpreting patient physiologic data; recognizes abnormal patient responses and takes immediate corrective action.
  • Manages patient airway and pulmonary status using endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, respiratory therapy, or extubation.
  • Manages emergence and recovery from anesthesia.
  • Responds to emergency situations, providing airway management, emergency fluids or drugs, and using basic and/or advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Provides post-anesthesia care; provides follow-up evaluation and care related to anesthesia side effects or complications.
  • Modifies pain relief therapy through utilization of drugs, regional anesthetic techniques to include epidural analgesia.
  • Evaluates anesthesia processes and outcome in terms of utilization, quality of services provided and the attainment of objectives.
  • Establishes and maintains complete and legible documentation of perioperative course, make postoperative rounds and report complications to CMO; maintain effective and confidential record-keeping.
  • Assists Hospital Administrator in equipment evaluation; resource management and procurement recommendations.
  • Participates in staff and committee functions for risk management, product evaluation and quality assurance
  • Works independent of anesthesiologist supervision.
  • Provides after-hours on-call response to emergency calls requiring anesthesia skills.
  • Capable of functioning independently and proven ability in exercising independent judgment.
  • Requires administration/management experience, including planning and development
  • Provide consultation, training and implementation of respiratory and ventilatory care.
  • Other skills include consultation skills, excellent verbal and written communication abilities, public speaking skills, proficiency with computer system.
  • Maintain continuing education activities.

 

JOB SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Required: Broad experience and expertise in selecting and providing anesthesia services in the absence of on-site anesthesia service backup.

 

EXPERIENCE (Years):

  • Required:
    • 5 years experience and certification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)
    • Current US license      

 

EDUCATION:

  • Required:
    • US licensure as RN
    • US licensure as Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

 

OTHER SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current certification for Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Registered Nurse (Full Time/Unaccompanied)

JOB DUTIES:

  • Serves as a consistent 12 hour rotating nursing staff member in the Inpatient and Outpatient Departments. Should be able to assume the nursing care of critically ill patients that present to both the Inpatient and Outpatient Departments.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with hospital and departmental practices that reflect JCAHO and Quality Improvement Standards and performs all work at a level to meet these standards.
  • Assists with current immunization and allergy protocols.
  • Provides patient care and delegated functions based upon the nursing process and in compliance with the hospital, clinic and Department of Nursing standards of practice.
  • Monitors the patient’s age appropriate behavioral and physiological status.
  • Assists in monitoring and evaluating the age appropriateness and effectiveness of patient care.
  • Is accountable for maintaining and improving own nursing knowledge and skill competence.
  • Supports the hospital’s philosophy, objectives, and goals.
  • Demonstrates awareness of the physiological, developmental, cultural, spiritual and psychosocial needs of patients throughout the life span.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of current pharmaceutical, nursing, and medical terminology.
