Island Living

Roi-Namur is the northernmost, and the second largest island in the Kwajalein atoll. Roi-Namur is the home of KREMS, the United States' most sophisticated and important research and development radar site. Roi-Namur, located approximately 50 miles north of Kwajalein, is served daily by commuter aircraft. The island is approximately two miles long and three-quarters of a mile wide.

Roi-Namur Island

Approximately 150 people live on Roi-Namur. With workers who commute from nearby Enniburr Islands and Kwajalein, the daily workforce on Roi-Namur numbers approximately 325. Transportation between the islands is by commuter airplane, catamaran, and barge.

There are some notable differences between our communities and stateside ones. There are no privately owned automobiles, bicycles and walking are the standard means of transportation and traffic is far lighter than in most small towns. As a result, the air-quality is cleaner and nightly star-gazing is far clearer than in the States.  There is a notable difference in the cost of living between Roi-Namur and stateside cities.  The provision of housing meals at Cafe' Roi and utilities, the fact that the primary mode of transportation is a bicycle and the opportunity to qualify for federal tax exemption are among the biggest factors in the cost of living difference.  Click here to estimate your cost of living differential.

HousingSingles Quarters

Housing consists of studio style quarters, all of which have fully furnished rooms averaging approximately 400 square feet in size, small kitchenettes, private bathrooms, central air conditioning and access to free laundry facilities.  There are a small number of two-room suites for married couples who live on Roi-Namur.  No children live on the island.

Community Bank offers an ATM located in the Air Terminal.

Café Roi is a cafeteria-style restaurant which offers special holiday meals and catering service.

Health Care

The Dispensary is staffed by a physician's assistant and/or a registered nurse.  Roi residents travel to Kwajalein for dental services and for Physician services.

Catholic mass is held on on the first Sunday of each month, and a Protestant service is held weekly at Roi-Namur Memorial Chapel.

Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) manages the Shoppette on Roi-Namur. The Shoppette offers a limited assortment of house wares, hardware, sporting goods, electronics, fresh produce, frozen meats, dry groceries, and magazines. DVDs can be rented through the Shoppette. Merchandise found in any of the stores on Kwajalein can be transferred to Roi-Namur at no extra charge through the Shoppette Shuttle Program.
